Employee Engagement Statistics

The internet is awash with countless employee engagement statistics. Research by leading HR consultancies and research houses such as Watson Wyatt, Towers Perrin and Gallup all consistently make the case for the link between engaged employees and a profitable business.

One of the most commonly sited statistics comes from the Gallup Organisation who for the past 30 years have surveyed more than 12 million employees worldwide. Annually they publish their Employee Engagement Index which shows the level of employee engagement by country.

In North America it is suggested that only 29 percent of employees are engaged, 54 percent are not engaged and 17 percent are actively disengaged. Although these figures vary by country and company, the North American statistics are closest to the world wide average.

CLC (who surveyed 50,000 employees worldwide in 2004) suggest that engaged employees perform up to 20 percent better than less engaged employees and are 87 percent less likely to leave the organisation than employees with lower levels of engagement.

In 2005 an Australian based human resource magazine noted that the cost of disengaged employees is 350 billion dollars.

There can be no doubt that engaged employees lead to higher levels of company performance, morale, innovation as well as greater levels of employee retention.
